The farewell post that I nearly forgot…

It’s been fun. Really. I’d like to thank Mike over at Royal Toybox for doing this again, everyone who participated, and everyone who bothers to read what I blather on about here on a regular basis.

I’ve been at this blogging thing for a while now…since the fall of 2003, to be exact…and the blog has seen me through a lot. I’ve connected to some amazing people and  got my face in the newspaper on more than one occasion because of it. I’m grateful for that.

The way I blog and the things I blog about have changed, for sure, but I’m okay with that. I definitely don’t post as frequently as I used to, and I’m okay with that too.

Anyway…see ya around, BufBloPoFoers. It’s been real. ;)

This is my post from the last day of BufBloPoFo last year. It is utterly unremarkable. ;)

In it, though, I did mention my wedding blog (no longer active, but still there).

And this is my post from one year ago today. It’s a list.

A year from now, I really, really hope to be in a permanent, full-time teaching position. And if all goes well, perhaps I will have produced some new, original prose. One can hope. ;)

BufBloPoFo 09 Topic for Day 12

Lisa, Maeve, Addie and I had Unkie BAStart and Auntie Outgrabes over for some vino and pastries last night. The girls, happy to have an audience, but happier to have cookies, took their time heading for bed. Parental wherewithal can come from years of childrearing, or it can apparently be pulled from a bag of goodies bought at Starbucks. That kind of knowledge doesn’t come automatically for parents, so for day 12 (three more days!) I want to hear your best advice for those of us raising kids.

So, I was all set to say, “I’ve got nothin’.” After all, I don’t have kids. I certainly don’t know anything about raising them.

But then, I thought…wait a minute. I’m a teacher. I should have a thing or two to say about this topic, right? Granted, I don’t get the little darlings until they’ve reached puberty, and that’s a whole different ballgame than raising little ones. ;)

So yeah, here’s my advice, for whatever it’s worth:

Read. Read to your kids. Read with your kids. Let your kids see you reading. Take them to the library. Surround them with books. If reading is a normal part of their life from the start, they’ll be less likely to hate it later on. Also, there is no end to the benefits kids get from reading. Their vocabulary skills will be stronger. They’ll be better writers. They’ll be better thinkers, better communicators, better equipped for the future. They’ll be more curious about the world, and they’ll know where to turn when they have questions.

But hey, you’re bloggers…I don’t really have to tell you any of this, do I? ;)

Oh, and when they’re teenagers? Don’t let them wear flip-flops to school in the middle of winter. Seriously.

BufBloPoFo Topic for BufBloPoFoMonique Day (Day 10)

On day ten last year, I found out about a girl named Monique who graduated from law school a year before me. She kicked cancer’s ass long enough to graduate, study for and then take the New York State Bar Exam. She passed away soon after that, cementing her status as one of my all time greatest personal heroes. I regret that I never met her, but I’m a better lawyer today because I know her story. For BufBloPoFoMonique day, tell me who inspires you. Who is your hero?

Interestingly enough, Kelly tagged me in a “Women I Admire” meme a while back. I started a draft post and never finished it. So, I guess I’ll finish it now.

My question for Erin is: you seem to be, like most of us, pretty busy. Your job is on your list of three things (so is relaxation, to be fair). What do you think Anna Quindlen, who seems to advocate more relaxed lifestyle, would ask you if she were posing the Bufblofopo question?

I was asked the above question by Dixie Chicken (gee, nothing like an easy question…hehe).

So, um. What would Anna Quindlen ask me? I have no earthly idea. Anna Quindlen is certainly a woman I’ve respected and admired for quite some time. Maybe she’d ask me about my aspirations as a writer. She also seems to have an opinion or two about education, so maybe she’d ask me about that.

I don’t know…but whatever she asked, it’d be a conversation I’d love to have!

I know this isn’t today’s prompt, but since I didn’t do it yesterday…

Tell me about your first home away from home. Tell me about the first apartment you had that wasn’t under your parents’ roof. A dorm? A loft? A cardboard box? Give us a tour.

Hrm…well, the first place I lived away from my parents was a room in Baldwin Hall at Allegheny College. That was followed by two years in Caflisch, then senior year in Red House (it was a house. It was red. Ah, good times…)

After college, my first apartment was right here in Buffalo. I lived there with Jen and another friend of ours from college. After that, I lived by myself for a while in a third-floor apartment off Elmwood. Then Jen and I lived together again on Lafayette, before I moved in with Rand.

Last year, as you all know, we bought a house:

I wish I had photos of the other places. Actually, I know I *have* them, I just don’t know where they are.

7-8 am: drift in and out of consciousness as Rand gets ready for work. Roll over and go back to sleep

10:30 am: get up, take some medicine, drink some water. Make oatmeal. Sit on the couch and eat oatmeal while checking email, etc.

11:30 am: fall asleep on couch.

1:30 pm: get up, make noodle soup for lunch. Go back to couch, watch CMT Crossroads (Taylor Swift and Def Leppard).

3 pm: call Rand at work. Get mail. Fall asleep on couch.

5:30 pm: wake up when Rand gets home from work. Lie on the couch whimpering softly while watching The Daily Show.

Spend rest of evening lounging, trying to get rid of horrible headache.

I still pretty much feel like death warmed over. Standing up for more than 15 minutes at a time has been challenging. Debating about whether to call in sick tonight, or wait and see how I feel in the morning.

Well, I nearly forgot about BufBloPoFo today, being sick and all. I dragged myself through the school day. If I don’t feel any better tomorrow, I’m calling in sick. Blech.

I’ve been drinking fluids nonstop all day. Of course, that means I’ve been in the bathroom approximately every 40 minutes.

Now I’m sitting here watching TV with Rand. We just watched last night’s American Idol, and I continue to fail to understand the judges’ unconditional love for Megan Joy Corkrey. Really, I don’t. Oh well.

I showed my freshmen a bit of the Baz Luhrmann Romeo & Juliet today. I forgot how much I liked it. (Really, I do. I know it’s a love it/hate it thing for most people.) I also forgot that my movie boyfriend Paul Rudd is in it (he plays Paris).

We might go see his new movie (I Love You, Man, with Jason Segel and Rashida Jones) this weekend. Yay!

Oh, back to Romeo and Juliet…like I said, I love the movie. It had a pretty polarizing effect on my students. Some of them liked it, and others really hated it.

Ah…on that note, I need to use the facilities for the 27th time today. And just so I’m not totally ignoring the post prompt, here’s my response from last year.

This post has nothing to do with Abba, and everything to do with spicy little balls of meat.

Yes, I’m finally posting photos of my meatballs, and I’m going to do my best to describe the process. As I’ve said before, it’s nearly impossible for me to write down a recipe for this sort of thing.

The process starts, of course, with the ingredients.

The large metal mixing bowl was probably not necessary for the amount of meatballs I was making, but it was what I had. ;)

I used about a pound and a half of ground beef. The necessary ingredients include:

  • grated cheese (I use a parmesan/romano blend that my family buys from The Cheese Man–really, that’s what his card says–who’s based in Jamestown.)
  • bread crumbs (my grandma made her own using leftover bread no one was going to eat and a food processor. I buy them in the can.)
  • parsley flakes
  • black pepper
  • garlic salt or powder (if you use powder, I recommend also adding some salt)
  • eggs

Here’s the tricky part…no measurements on any of the above ingredients. I dump a bunch of stuff in and mix it up, adding things until it feels/smells right. You need a good meat-to-bread ratio. (you don’t want it too meaty) I use lots of cheese. I ended up using all three eggs in this batch, but it’s hard to say.

Here’s what the mixture looked like:

You’ve really got to work it through, to make sure it’s well mixed.

Then, you roll it into balls. I scoop some of the meat out with a tablespoon and form the ball from that, but you can make them whatever size you like.

I always test one…form one into a patty and fry it so that I can taste it before frying the rest.

Once you’re satisfied with the flavor, it’s time to fry!

I just used canola oil. You can use olive oil, but that costs more. Plus, I was out of it. ;)

The meatballs should just be browned in the pan. (I cook them a little bit longer if they’re going to be eaten in this state.)

When I make sauce, I start with cans of Hunt’s tomato sauce and some water, seasonings (cheese, garlic salt/powder or real garlic, various italian seasonings, pepper, and a bay leaf), add meatballs (and just a smidge of the oil they were fried in), and cook for several hours. I let the water I added cook down, which gives enough time for the sauce to really cook into the meatballs.

I thought the results were pretty tasty. :)

I’m using Mike’s prompt loosely today. He put out a topic about food, so I’m going to write about my favorite places to eat in and around Buffalo, and my favorite foods there.

1. Woo Chon (Korea House), 402 Evans Rd., Williamsville

Delicious, authentic Korean food. The best thing to do is to sit at one of the barbecue tables and order bulgagi (chicken or beef. both are good, but the beef is unbelievable).

2. The Village Grille, Main Street, Williamsville

Best. Hummus. Ever.

3. Taste of India (Sheridan Drive, Amherst)/India Gate (Elmwood Ave., Buffalo)

I don’t know if I can even pick one meal. The chicken malai and chicken muglai are my favorites. The naan is amazing. Appetizers are fantastic. I love this place.

4. Gabriel’s Gate, Allen Street, Buffalo

My favorite place for sandwiches/burgers.

5. Fat Bob’s, Virginia Place, Buffalo

I always get the pulled pork and either macaroni and cheese or mashed potatoes. Oh, who am I kidding…mac & cheese AND potatoes. Yum.

6. Cole’s, Elmwood Ave., Buffalo

The Clancy. So bad for me, and soooooo good.

BufBloPoFo Topic for Day 1:

Let’s start it off easy. Hi! How’re things? Remember me? Remember when we were blog friends? What’s new whichu? For your first day of Blufporbfofoing, tell me the three biggest things going on in your life right now. If you have fewer than three things going on in your life right now, then your assignment is to come over to my house and pack. (Ahem *slacker* cough…)
So yes, I decided to take part in this year’s BufBloPoFo. I’ll use the post prompts unless I have some other pressing issue to discuss. Like my Kindle. ;)

I suppose a lot of things have happened since last year at this time. I got married, bought a house, and got a new job. But the question asked about what’s going on in my life right now. So, ummm…the three biggest things going on in my life right now:

1. My job. Being a new teacher is tough. Teaching two different grade levels is tough. Keeping up with grading papers while building your curriculum is tough. Basically, I love having a job, but that job keeps me extremely busy. When I’m not working, I’m usually trying to relax and unwind.

2. The house. Yes, we moved in last summer, but turning the house into our home is an ongoing project. I continue to be pleased with the kitchen. I’m not really sure what’s next…I’ve got a bunch of things on my list, like new living room furniture, putting in shelves in the living room, possibly painting the brick around the fireplace a more pleasing color (everything is beige).

3. Urm. I dunno…maybe participating in this “Biggest Loser” contest at work. Based on last week’s results, I don’t think I’m going to place (one weigh-in to go), but I have met my personal goal. I’m feeling pretty good about that.
