I owe a reading, watching, listening post, which I will get around to soon…but until then, here’s a few tidbits:

The new issue of Toasted Cheese is up. And I need to get the newsletter out!

NaBloPoMo is over, and I made it! Woohoo! Not nearly as impressive as finishing NaNoWriMo, no, but I’m still pleased.

That fabulous little badge is courtesy of partofeverything. Thanks! :D

Via Emma, I heard about National Photo Posting Month:

Thomas Brock has started NaPhotoPoMo - also known as National Photograph Posting Month. Thus far, it’s going to be in February, but that’s subject to change. The challenge is simple. Just take a picture and post it on your blog each and every day of the month.

I thought that sounded like too much fun to pass up, so I’m in. It’s open to anyone, so go on over and sign up!

And finally, I had a photo selected for Schmap!! Buffalo in the nightlife section. It’s a photo of Rand playing with Greg Klyma and Tom Bianchi at Nietzsche’s

let's talk about cher

I’m sure I’m forgetting a thing or two. Updates about the weekend (and photos!) to come.

peanuts

Peanuts at the Disco.

These people were standing near us, dancing. I tried in vain to take their photo surreptitiously, and finally they noticed me and posed.

My companions and I could not, for the life of us, figure out what the connection between Peanuts characters and disco was…but it was amusing, and as I said, too weird not to photograph.

So Lucy, Chuck, and Patty, whoever you are,  this one’s for you!

Busy days…in lieu of a typical “Thursday Thoughts” post, I wanted to share a few upcoming musical events!

Tomorrow night at the California Brew Haus in Rochester, we have…er…”Nipplepalooza III” (no, I don’t know why it’s called that) featuring:

Ookla the Mok
Worm Quartet
Carla Ulbrich
Rob Balder
and Sudden Death

Show begins at 9:30. $5, 21 and over, $7 under. (more info at the Worm Quartet link)

I have to say, I’m most looking forward to seeing Carla, because it’s been quite a long time.

Saturday night (and every Saturday in December), Greg Klyma and Tom Bianchi will be at Madame Mocha’s, 1190 Lovejoy Street in Buffalo. I’ve never been there, but I’m told it’s a great venue, and Greg and Tom are always fun!

And next Saturday, of course, is Lowest of the Low at Club Infinity. I think those tickets are $28.

See you there?

When you get engaged, one of the first questions you hear (after “have you set a date”) from a lot of people is “are you taking his name?”

It’s a question previous generations didn’t give much thought to…the answer was always yes. That’s what was done, and it wasn’t questioned.

I’ve watched lots and lots of friends go through this process. I know some people who kept their names. I know others who hyphenated, or used their maiden name as a middle name. I know some people who agonized over the decision and ended up taking their husband’s name. And I know others who were adamantly against changing their name, and yet when the wedding came around, they did.

My answer? It is and always has been yes.

I don’t have a problem with anyone choosing not to, or hyphenating, or whatever else they decide to do…like so many other decisions women have to make, particularly those involving marriage and children, these are personal decisions that become very, very public. And public decisions mean that people have no problem offering their opinion on the matter. Not too long ago, I read an article on Feministing that made me feel shame for wanting to take my future husband’s name. Shame.

Yes, I know that it’s not very progressive of me. I know that it’s based on a patriarchal system that treated women as property (and that there are people in this world who still do). I’ve thought about that, and I’ve weighed it out, and I’ve decided that I don’t care. I want it. I want to share his name…I want it to be our name.

At this point in my life, I’m fairly secure in my identity. My name doesn’t change who I am. I don’t have a solidly established career that would suffer from my changing my name.

And besides–I hit the jackpot in the name department. Rand’s last name is gorgeous.

One thing that does bug me, that I still see happening enough to have complained about it in the past, is when a woman essentially loses her first name as a result of getting married, being referred to as “Mrs. Brad Pitt” (or whatever). Even worse…back in my reporter days, when I had to transcribe birth announcements, I would see people being referred to as Mrs. John Smith (the former Jane Doe).

Gah. I have always hated that wording…as if that person no longer exists. But I digress.

At any rate, next July, I will jump through the necessary hoops to become Erin Bellavia…but that doesn’t mean Erin Nappe has ceased to be. I’ll just have a different name. And I think I’ll smell every bit as sweet.

  • Last night’s episode of Heroes was pretty good, but I must say I am disappointed in Peter. How gullible can he be? Gah. Kristin has the scoop on what’s to come…sort of. (no real spoilers). I SO want Elle (Kristen Bell) to turn against her creepy father and join our Heroes. I heart her. I don’t want her to be bad. :(
  • I have just now remembered two things I left out of my last Reading, Watching, Listening post–at school, I watched The Devil’s Arithmetic (based on the book of the same title) with the kids. I thought it was great–very well done, harrowing without being too graphic. Also, 1408. Stephen King! John Cusack! I liked it. I didn’t *love* it, but I liked it.
  • And, some sad news…Lowest of the Low is saying goodbye. I’m planning on being at the show at Club Infinity next weekend (now a farewell show…). Who else is going to be there? In a way, I’ve been a very, very lucky Low fan. I didn’t really become a fan until well after they had already broken up (the first time), and they reunited shortly after I moved to Buffalo. I’ve had lots and lots of opportunities to see them live. Sigh.

That’s it for now…happy Monday, all!

I’m going to try to make this a quick one…

Rand and I spent Thanksgiving with his family. As I mentioned before, I did miss my family, but we had a lovely day anyway. Sadly, I did not have time to make my apple pie. :(

There was a big group there for the meal…aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. That made it feel a little bit more like home for me! I did not take any photos on Thanksgiving day because I was too lazy to get out the camera. I do have a sort of funny story to share, but I think I’ll save it for later.

This is long and full of photos, so I’m going to cut…

Reading: I finished the other two books in the Scott Westerfield trilogy, Pretties and Specials. The trilogy was interesting. I didn’t find it earth-shattering or anything, but it did raise some interesting questions. I can see why middle school English teachers would like it.

Watching: Last week, Rand and I watched Hot Fuzz (which I already talked about). There was lots of random TV watching this week…like bits and pieces of VH1’s 100 One-Hit Wonders (or something) hosted by William Shatner.

Thanksgiving night, we watched Christmas Vacation, which never ceases to amuse me. (I giggle every single time they shake the box and it meows.) I just learned that the movie was written by John Hughes–I should have realized the connection between the embarrassing visiting grandparents in this move and in Sixteen Candles.

While I was doing laundry and other random tasks, Rand watched Slime City, a dreadfully, hilariously bad horror movie from 1988. We met the director (who is from Fredonia and now lives in Buffalo) at that comic book/memorabilia show a couple of weeks ago. Rand traded him an Ookla CD for a copy of the movie. I ended up watching about the last third of it with him. I wouldn’t say the movie is *good*, but it was entertaining. One thing that was interesting that we both commented on was that we think Zachary Quinto (Sylar on Heroes) has seen and studied the lead actor from this movie.

Listening: Elliott Smith, Brian Regan (sometimes very funny, sometimes not so much…), Lewis Black at Carnegie Hall (not nearly as funny as I’d hoped it would be), some Christmas music, and a bunch of other stuff that I can’t seem to remember right now.

Kristen and Tim

Okay, not technically a photo…but I made this for Rand’s cousin and gave it to her yesterday. (This was the reason I was looking for the lyrics to the Glengarry Bhoys song…)

I like doing this so much, and I love seeing the look on the recipient’s face! (while this isn’t always possible, I do enjoy it when it happens.)

If you’re interested in purchasing one of these as a gift, you can visit my etsy shop. You can also see more samples at flickr.

turkey

Yesterday, I drew this turkey on my classroom whiteboard with a black marker. Throughout the day, students added various messages and lots of color. I’m thankful for eighth graders who still want to act like kids.

I’m thankful for my job, even though it’s not permanent. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.

I’m thankful for my friends–old and new, near and far, real-life and virtual.

I’m thankful for my family, who I will be missing today. This is my first Thanksgiving away from home. Ever.

I’m thankful for my *other* family, the one I’m gaining, who I will be spending this holiday with.

I’m thankful for the communities I belong to…the one that’s built up around this little blog, Toasted Cheese, livejournal, etc.

And finally, I’m thankful for Rand’s love, and the life we’re building together.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

Well, the stress dreams seem to have left me…at least for the time being.

I’ve been thinking a lot about wedding traditions lately. Everyone seems to have such strong opinions about them, and it can be very difficult to buck tradition. Here are some of the things Rand and I are thinking about doing (and not doing).

The garter/bouquet toss

I stopped being amused by the bouquet toss approximately ten years ago. Plus, there won’t exactly be hordes of single people at the wedding. It’s a dwindling group…the last thing I want to do is humiliate my remaining single friends and family.

Okay, I’ll admit that it was sort of cute when Rand and I caught the respective objects at my brother’s wedding…but still…

The Chicken Dance

Is this really a tradition? Ah well. I must admit that I actually *enjoy* the chicken dance. It stays.

The Dollar Dance

I know that the dollar dance is a regional/cultural tradition, and those who didn’t grow up with it tend to find it appalling. I don’t want to do it, but not because I think it’s tacky…I don’t want to do it because it takes freaking forever. The bigger your wedding, the more people lining up to dance. Augh.

Can anyone tell me why the “girly” shot for the dollar dance is always Peach Schnapps? Blergh.

The Bridal Party

This is the one I think I might take some flak over. Rand and I have discussed this one at length…and we’ve decided not to have a traditional bridal party. Many of our friends and family will be involved in the wedding in important ways, and we’d rather have them doing important things than wearing matching clothes and posing for pictures.

And my friends, the ones I will turn to for advice, the ones who will be holding my hand and keeping me sane through all of this, will be doing that regardless of what they’re wearing.

My cousin Brandy will be my sole “attendant”–in charge of holding my flowers, etc. We’re also going to get Rand’s nephews involved in some way.

The huge, towering cake

Haven’t quite worked out what we’re doing here…but I’m thinking of a small ceremonial cake for Rand and I to cut, and some other (less expensive) option to serve our guests…perhaps sheet cake, or cupcakes made and decorated by family if that’s logistically possible.

The DJ

Already been discussed. No DJ.

I think I’m forgetting some things, but that’s good enough for now, I think. What are your favorite/least favorite wedding traditions?

Curse you, NaBloPoMo…if I hadn’t made the commitment, I so would not be blogging today. I had a busy day at school, despite the fact that the kids were watching a movie. (I, on the other hand, was grading tests.)

So, moving on…

Just in case there’s anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, there’s an online petition supporting the WGA. I signed it!

One of my favorite new places to visit on the internet is The “Blog” of “Unnecessary” Quotation Marks. It’s from a couple of weeks ago, but I particularly enjoyed this post.

There’s a bit of backstory to this, but there was an image on this post at John Scalzi’s Whatever that made me laugh out loud. If I’d been drinking something, I’d be in need of a new laptop. Oh, hey! I just remembered that I can do screenshots. Here it is:

ephesians

And finally, I’ve been saving a bunch of these “quote of the day” posts that I liked for…uh…something or another. So I’m going to start throwing them here. And today’s quote is:

“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.”

This weekend was pretty mellow…which believe me, is fine!

Friday night, Rand and I caught up on some TV watching. Saturday, we intended to catch a showing of The Darjeeling Limited  at the Amherst…however, when we arrived (after lunch at Brodo), we found that the 2 pm showing had been canceled due to a private event. Feh.

Went grocery shopping. We’d intended to feed our little can of change into the Coinstar machine, but found that we would have been waiting a very long time. A couple had made it to the machine ahead of time with several large vats full of change. No kidding. We decided to try again after our shopping was done, but they were still there. After having fed nearly $1000 worth of change into the machine. Mildly annoying.

Later, we watched Hot Fuzz, which we’d gotten from Netflix *months* ago. No kidding. I liked it. Probably not quite as much as I liked Shaun of the Dead, but I liked it quite a bit.

Sunday, we visited with Rand’s family and watched Ghostbusters, which David had rented for his son. Hee.

The only other notable thing about the weekend? I’ve begun having wedding stress dreams. Three nights in a row. This had better not continue until the wedding. I’ll lose my mind. In the first dream, someone had brought me my clothes, but forgot my shoes. In the second dream, we forgot the music. And in the third dream, tons of people just didn’t show up (and not, y’know…third cousins I didn’t really care about. Like my best friends didn’t show up. It was dreadful.).

So yeah. Maybe I need to step up the yoga? Meditate? Hire a wedding planner? ;) (Kidding about that last one. I’m not hiring a wedding planner.)

Hope you all had a pleasant weekend.

Reading: I’ve just begun Uglies by Scott Westerfield. It’s the first in a trilogy that’s been getting a lot of attention. The underlying concept seems to be very similar to Lois Lowry’s The Giver, but the story is quite different.

My “to read” pile is beginning to get out of control. ;)

Watching: How much do I love Chuck? (the answer is: a lot) Loved seeing Kevin Weisman, even if he was playing a baddie.

Dirty Sexy Money continues to entertain.

Last night, TiVo recorded Don’t Forget the Lyrics, so I went ahead and watched the episode. Hmmm…I’ve gotta say, I much prefer the pure, unadulterated cheesefest that is The Singing Bee. The only thing Lyrics has going for it is Wayne Brady, and he doesn’t even get to sing.

The worst of it? Lyrics is a shameless rip-off of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? (according to Wikipedia, the format is similar to “another FOX show, Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? No mention of Millionaire. But seriously…you get three “back ups” (aka “lifelines”) and Wayne asks you to “lock in your lyrics” as opposed to Regis’s “final answer” question. Even the set and lighting and “dramatic tension” music invoke memories of Millionaire. Hrm.

I also watched another episode of Reaper, which is fun…I’m just not sure I care enough to stick with it.

Listening: Hmmm…not sure I have anything new to talk about. I just picked up Jackdaw’s Blackgrass, but I have not yet listened to it. Check back for a report.

new curtain!

This is the new curtain I bought for the living room window. I ordered it from Amazon, and it arrived in two days, even though it was from an outside vendor!

For those of you who have never seen it in real life, here’s the old curtain:

curtain

So, you can see why I’m so happy. The new curtain is much shorter…but it’s long enough to cover the window and for the bottom to be unseen behind the couch. Good enough for now.

By the way…I think pinch-pleated draperies and drapery hooks should be abolished. Gah.

But anyway…yeah. Happy Erin. Hope everyone’s having a pleasant Friday!

Gonna be a short one tonight…it’s been a long day. Here it is, in bullet-point form.

A couple of wedding-related things, first:

  • My Skechers came yesterday, and now that I’m seeing them in person, I think they’re too dark. They’re more beige than the off-white they appeared in the picture. They do come in white…not that my dress is white, either, but I think the white might be a better match. I dunno, thoughts?
  • Also, I was browsing etsy yesterday for jewelry, and I found these pretty things. (That sort of mauve-rosy color is what I’ve been thinking about…)

Let’s see…what else…

  • The first marking period ended on Friday, so the last couple of days have been busy with entering grades and report card comments and the like. Report cards allow us to give up to two comments. There were one or two kids I wished I could give about ten. ;)
  • Lately, I’ve been completely addicted to the Italian Wedding Soup from Wegmans.
  • I’ll be attending the World’s Largest Disco next week, and I have secured myself an appropriately heinous dress to wear. What I do not have is appropriately heinous shoes. Any suggestions? (the dress is silver)

blingy bling

I love my ring. I really do.

I’ve never been much of a jewelry girl, really. I usually have one pair of earrings (gold hoops) that I wear regularly. Before the engagement, the last ring I wore was my sorority pin that I had turned into a ring after graduating from college…and it’s been years since I wore that. I keep a few cheap, funky necklaces and earrings on hand for when I dress up all fancy…and that’s about it.

Ever since the first time the idea of a diamond actually crossed my mind, I began casually observing rings–both on the fingers of women I knew and in jewelry stores. I’ve never been a fan of the high prong settings that seem to jump off the finger. I’ve also never been one for the ginormous stone. I’m all about the modest. The tasteful. When I went looking for a ring, I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted, but I was quite sure about what I didn’t want. I was also quite sure about what I didn’t care about. If anyone tried talking to me about the “four Cs,” my eyes glazed over in a matter of seconds. Just. Don’t. Care.

A couple of years ago, I was getting my haircut, and I overheard one of the stylists talking about her friend’s engagement ring…it was four carats, or something obscene like that…saying that when she got engaged, her ring had better be at least that big.

And I thought to myself, “Hm. There really are women like that in the world.”

Shortly after my engagement, Jen sent me a link to the site true bride confessions. I spent too much time there, reading the posts, being alternately amused and horrified. Here’s an example of a post in the “horrified” column:

“I was so disappointed when I saw the ring when my fiancee proposed.

I know it’s so shallow and selfish, but I wanted a ring that would compare to my friends and co-workers. I was embarassed to show mine to anyone, because it’s a little small in comparison.

I never said a word to him, and acted thrilled, but I was so let down.

As a woman, I know how other women think. A big ring means he really loves you a lot, and is willing to go into debt in girl language.

Again, with the “OMG, there really are women like this in the world.”

So let me get this straight…Debt=Love? That is one seriously messed up worldview. I mean really…doesn’t getting married mean that his debt becomes YOUR debt?

Anyway. For me, when it came right down to it, it wasn’t the ring that mattered at all. It was what the ring symbolized. I wanted something beautiful. I wanted something that looked like it belonged on my finger. And when I walked into that vintage jewelry shop and saw this ring, I knew. I was so sad when I thought it was gone. (And truthfully, even if it had been, I would have gotten over it…it was never the ring that *really* mattered.)

Maybe out there in that “girl world” in which I cheerfully refuse to participate, people are judging me for not having a rock the size of my head.

*shrug*

I don’t care. Rand could have given me a plastic ring from a gumball machine and I would have been equally as thrilled.

Maybe diamonds are some girls’ best friends…just not mine.

I’ve been updating lots of photos, so be sure to check them out. Tonight, I uploaded two photos of me in my new glasses:

new glasses 2

I’m disappointed that you can’t see how truly cool they are in the photo. The frames are brown, but they have a sort of lavender tinge to them. I am pleased. I got lectured by the optometrist, because it’s been way too long since I had my eyes checked.

This is not new, but I have a pterygium on my right eye. (Jen, you probably don’t want to click!) It’s small, and it is not interfering with my vision in any way, so I’m told that it’s nothing to worry about. You have to be pretty close to my eye to be able to see it. If it ever does become a problem, I can have it removed. (eep!)

I probably paid a bit too much for the glasses, because I let them talk me into upgrading the lenses to the anti-glare, scratch-resistant ones. I did not get contacts this time, but I’ll probably go back for them sometime before the wedding (I wear them very, very infrequently).

Anyway, let’s see what’s up around teh intarwebs…

Apparently, the Sweet Valley High books are being reissued. (via Pop Culture Junk Mail) Question is, do the publishers think kids are going to go for this? Or are they for us thirtysomethings who read them as tweens?

It took me a long time to realize this (uh, Jen had to point it out to me), but I was mentioned in jen14221’s last “Buffalo Blogs” column in the Spree. It’s not online, but I took some photos!

IMG_0738.JPG

Also getting shout-outs were some of my favorite bloggers…Samantha, Mild Mannered Blogger, and Christine.

My

has begun its annual fundraising drive, which means, of course, address labels! I like the new labels–they have photographs of some campus landmarks, and they’re very cute.

IMG_0741.JPG

(those are just stickers. The actual labels actually have my address…)

And my final tidbit…this past weekend has been “blast from the past” weekend! I got three friend requests/contacts on facebook. The first was from a guy I went to grade school with. He moved back to England with his family in middle school. Hi, Colin!

The others were from a couple of fellow Alleghenians…one was good friends with my ex, K. Hi, Mike! And Reid, well, I didn’t even expect him to remember who I was. Hi, Reid!

It was a pretty low-key weekend, and that’s fine by me. Friday evening, I met Rand for dinner in the city. We ended up going to Mythos on Elmwood. I ordered soup with my meal–they were out of the lemon chicken rice, so I went with the Italian wedding soup. What I got didn’t resemble any Italian wedding soup I’ve ever seen. It had a chicken broth base, and it had meatballs in it. That was about it.

My meal (some sort of chicken and pasta dish that was on the specials menu) was pretty good, but I don’t think it agreed with me.

On Saturday, we met up with John at IHoP, a place I go approximately once a year. This *is* the time of year to do it, though, because Pumpkin Pancakes! I was a little grumpy (it was too crowded and too cold, and our server annoyed me more than once), but the pancakes were good.

Came home and hung the new sheers on the window, which arrived in like two days! Awesome.

Rand and I stopped at a thrift store, and I picked up a couple of paperbacks. One of them was this book, (one of my favorite childhood books) in fantastic condition:

IMG_0744.JPG

but that’s not all!

I don’t know who Christine is, or why she didn’t want this anymore, but it’s mine now!

Speaking of signed copies, I’m very pleased to have this:

I have awesome friends…

Sunday, we had Ookla-related stuff to attend to–a comics/memorabilia show at the Millennium Hotel. The guys played a few songs and sold a few CDs.

IMG_0753.JPG

And today is still part of my weekend…I’ve been keeping busy shopping, doing laundry, and reading. And now, I’m about to go have an eye exam…something I’m long overdue for.

Finally, just a note of thanks to all the veterans out there.

I may add to this later, but that’ll do for now. Gotta run!
