I seriously need time to slow down, or days with more hours in them or something…I seriously love my job, and I love my second job (the college teaching thing), but entire weeks go by when I barely have time to breathe, let alone blog or read a book that’s not school-related. I see everyone posting about NaNoWriMo, and I get a little wistful…ah, maybe someday I’ll get there again.

So anyway, here’s a bunch of random stuff:

  • Rand and I went to a couple of Halloween parties last weekend, and here’s what we looked like:

IMG_3156

  • I very much enjoyed this article, from The Onion. (I’ll spare you my rant about reading and literature and Cliff notes…or at least save it for my rarely-updated teacher blog.)
  • I found Ben & Jerry’s Pumpkin Cheesecake ice cream at BJ’s, which made me the happiest girl in the world. It did not disappoint.

IMG_3149

  • OMG, I love Modern Family. We got the first disc from Netflix, and finally started watching it last week. Before finishing, we ordered season one on Blu-Ray. Unfortunately, when we got them, we discovered that we need an update for the player before we can watch them. Grr…have to wait for a disc from Sony. Double grr. Since I’m talking about this, can any of you fans out there tell me how important it is to watch the episodes in sequence? (like, can we watch the current episodes before seeing all of season 1?)
  • Enjoyed a celebration of the invention of the flux capacitor (which is what makes time travel possible) Friday night at the house o’Lehnen. Much laughter was had by all. :)
  • And with that, I dive back into the pile of grading. ‘Night!

Anyone who has known me for any length of time has probably at one time or another heard me talk about my fear of The Wet. I understand that just exactly what constitutes The Wet can be confusing, so I decided to put together this handy guide.

First, things that are wet, but not The Wet:

  • Shower/bath
  • Hand washing
  • Dish washing
  • Swimming pools
  • Hot tubs
  • Waterslides

Things that are The Wet:

  • Water from the sink/bath/shower/pool spraying or splashing you while fully clothed
  • Stepping in a puddle of water (especially with socks on)
  • Snow or slush that creeps into your socks
  • Getting caught in the rain without an umbrella
  • Being tossed or pushed into any body of water with clothes on
  • The dish towel hanging on the edge of the sink that accidentally gets soaked
  • Any water trapped in an item that comes out of the dishwasher that unexpectedly comes out, soaking me or dripping all over the floor
  • DISHES PUT AWAY WET. ACK.
  • The bottoms of pants getting soaked with rain/snow
  • Dishes at the salad bar that just came out of the dishwasher-WET. (dude, I’m not putting my bread on a wet plate.)
  • Overhanging eaves/ledges that drip water on you (especially on your head)
  • Amusement park log rides

Disclaimers/exceptions

On hand washing…I can’t stand to wash my hands with my rings on. I must set them down or put them in my pocket, and put them back on only after my hands are totally dry, otherwise, water gets trapped underneath them. OMG, the WET. Also, I hate those stupid blowy air dryer things. I keep hand sanitizer in my purse for such occasions.

I am nearly certain I’m forgetting something, so I will add on if anything else comes to mind…

In easy, bullet-point form.

  • Over the weekend, I purchased this book. It is chock full of low-fat, low-calorie recipes involving PUMPKIN! WHEE!
  • As of today’s “Biggest Loser” weigh-in, I am down 5 pounds from the weight that so horrified me and prompted me to join the competition. That’s nearly halfway to my target, so yay.
  • Eden just invited me to a Facebook event that brought this song to my attention. I was amused, so I thought I’d post it here. (It’s a Steeler fan parody of Beyonce’s “All the Single Ladies.” Darn it all, that song is catchy.)
  • Eden and I chose and notified our Dead of Winter contest winners. Yay!
  • It is mid-term/Regents week at school, and the marking period closes Friday. That means I have no classes to teach this week, but I have a TON of work to do. Tomorrow and Wednesday, I proctor exams. When I’m not doing that, I’ll be grading or entering grades.
  • Rand and I decided to attend Trinity @ 7 last evening. We enjoyed it, and will probably be back. What makes it even more enticing? Completely randomly, we ran into his cousin Paul and his girlfriend Tyra there. Tyra was reading! Small, small Buffalo world.
  • Have not yet located a Wii. I just need to sit down and make phone calls one of these days.
  • Chatted with my dear friend Stephanie today. It had been far too long! So thanks again, Stephanie, for pinning me down. ;)
  • Through a serendipitous series of events that led to me being online friends with Jessica (aka miss_shortskirt), I got to read an ARC of Ally Carter’s upcoming book. Squee! I *heart* this series.  I’ll have to post a review.
  • Since I was a slacker and didn’t really post last week, I forgot to mention the inauguration. I got to watch for a bit at school, and I thought it was incredibly moving.  Yay, President Obama!

Is there more? Probably, but that’s all I can manage for now. Toodles!

So a while back, because I was running out of space on my computer, I bought an external hard drive and transferred my iTunes library. Other than a semi-annoying glitch during the actual transfer, that’s worked out fine.

    Here’s where it gets annoying.

My laptop has two USB ports. Both my iPod and external hard drive need to plug in to a USB port. I’ve discovered that these two devices cannot be plugged in at the same time. Serious bummer.

I’ve done a bit of poking around the internet, and it appears that what I need is a USB hub with its own power source. Anyone have any experience with these?

    I’m tired. And cold. Brrrr…

Tonight is yoga night, which is good…class was cancelled last week because my instructor had the flu. However, I’m feeling highly unmotivated to get up off the couch. Bleh.

I’ve been feeling like it should be Friday all day. Wishful thinking? Maybe. But alas, it is not. One more day.

Hmm. I must have had a point in mind when I started this post, right? Because I couldn’t possibly have opened up a post just to say that I’m cold and lazy and wish it were Friday, right?

Um, yeah. If I did have anything else, it’s gone now. Perhaps it will come back to me later. Or not.

    Stay tuned!

If I start to think about all the things I haven’t gotten around to posting about…well, I’ll just find myself getting horribly overwhelmed, and that would be counterproductive for me right now. I find it strange that my life feels SO much busier than it did at this time last year, when I had *more* going on. After all, I dropped my college class (I taught one class during the fall last year) AND I am no longer planning a wedding. So why do I feel so buried all the time?

I’m finding myself really missing the block scheduling that was introduced at the school where I worked last year. With that schedule, I found myself VERY busy two days out of every 8-day cycle, but the rest of the days were more gently-paced and productive. Now? I don’t feel like I’m ever caught up. I’m feeling better than I was at the beginning of the year, but still awfully crazy most days. And being an introvert by nature, I’m utterly exhausted by the end of the day…most Fridays, I feel ready to cry with relief when the last bell rings. This past week, I’ve been trying to focus on giving myself some time to relax and reenergize at the end of every day. I put on some calming music, light a candle, use my aromatherapy heat wrap, and this seems to be helping. I should also be working more yoga into my weekly schedule. I’ve been thinking about joining a gym as well. We’ll see…

Anyway, here’s what I’ve been looking at on the internet the past couple of days. This post, from cracked.com, might be the most disturbing thing I’ve ever seen.

The 5 most horrifying bugs in the world

For the love of all that is holy, let me never come into contact with that Japanese giant hornet. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaugh!

Then, just for kicks, I read this: a Roman Catholic priest threatened with excommunication for daring to suggest that hey, maybe Rome should consider the idea of ordaining women. That, along with the comments I’ve read on that article, remind me why I voluntarily announced my resignation from the Catholic Church a few years ago. I briefly considered writing a full-blown Catholicism-WOW! rant on this topic, but I just don’t have the energy.

So there ya go…enjoy, and have a happy Friday!

    Arrrrrrrr!

Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day! :D

And happy anniversary to my good friend Eden.

As for me, I’m just happy it’s a Friday. Now where did I put my rum?

I’m back, to post a silly pirate joke:

A pirate walks into a bar, and he has a steering wheel sticking out of the front of his pants.

The bartender says, “Hey, do you know you’ve got a steering wheel sticking out of the front of your pants?”

And the pirate says, “Arrrr, it’s drivin’ me nuts!

    Thanks, folks…I’m here all week…

    3. Rand just sent me this, which made me laugh…

    4. DMV experience (at the ECC North location) was completely and utterly painless. Whee!

    5. Wal-Mart happily gave me store credit for a miniblind I bought and decided I didn’t want, but lost the receipt for. Win! Already spent store credit.

    6. Prepared chicken for dinner using a new slow cooker recipe. Cross your fingers!

So, as we prepare for our big move (will be happening sometime this month…), we’re clearing out clutter and giving away/selling/throwing away lots of stuff.

I currently have a bag full of movies on VHS. Many of them are Disney movies. Some of them are unopened. I know I can’t sell them, but is there anyplace that would take them before I just throw them in the garbage? Lemme know if you know of anything.

    I’m in a much better mood today…thanks. :)

I think I’m just starting to get stressed out about all the things I have going on right now. My brain is fried. I’m madly dashing to get all my grading done (after this week, I have journals to grade, then portfolios, then the college classes are done…however, I still have middle school stuff to grade!). I really feel like I need to get my invitations ready this weekend.

And at that, I should be getting back to my grading…

    New pens!

So last weekend, I ordered two pens from isellpens.com. This was the first one:

    IMG_1403.JPG

It’s a Duke pen, and it’s really, really pretty. The photo doesn’t do it justice at all. It also came in a snazzy case:

    IMG_1405.JPG

It came with a converter and also takes cartridges. Right now, I have a black cartridge (that came with the AldoDomani pen I bought at OfficeMax. It’s a medium point, and I don’t really care for it) in it. I like the way the pen feels in my hand, and it writes quite nicely:

    IMG_1406.JPG

The other pen, which I neglected to take any photos of, is a Hero 328. I like the way this pen writes, but it has a squeeze (bladder) converter, which is kind of a pain. I didn’t have any bottled ink (I just ordered some), so I filled it by cutting open one of my Sheaffer cartridges and dumping the contents into a bottlecap.

I have discovered that the Sheaffer ink cartridges don’t fit into any other pens. Bummer. I ordered one bottle of purple ink (I love purple!) and some black and blue cartridges, which should be here soon.

I did get those Pilot Varsity pens I ordered…and they’re fine, except that they claim to be fine point and I don’t think they really are.

And that’s my pen report for today. Whoo!

    1. The Cinnamon Dolce Latte at Starbucks is no Pumpkin Spice, but it is an acceptable substitute. Plus, it comes in a sugar-free version that’s not at all bad.

    2. I actually found Britney Spears genuinely funny on HIMYM this week.

    3. I’m going out to eat at Taste of India shortly, and I am SO EXCITED. :)

    4. There was something else that escaped my mind the moment I opened this post.

    5. It was almost spring-ish here today. Hurrah for the sun!

    6. Our wedding is in 108 days…rapidly approaching double-digit territory! (don’t forget to check my wedding blog for updates! y’know, if you’re into that sort of thing…)

    7. My car hit 100,000 miles this weekend. I took a pic of the odometer, but I haven’t uploaded it yet.

And that’ll do it for me…Happy hump day, everyone!

Reasons why today is a happy day:

    1. The SUN! Okay, so it’s still cold outside, but SUN!

    2. Belgian waffles with raspberries and real whipped cream.

    3. Good news from friends!

    4. Packages from Amazon–Rand ordered Enchanted for me. Yay! I also ordered a couple of cheap disposable fountain pens that arrived today. (I’ve caught the fountain pen bug from Emma…I bought one at Office Max, but it’s a medium point pen, and I really prefer a fine point. I’m looking at a couple of other inexpensive options, but I need to do some more research on things like ink option, and cartridges vs. converters for bottled ink, etc.).

    5. Having the day off.

    :)

Happy Easter to anyone who will be celebrating this weekend. I’ll be heading to PA for dinner on Sunday, spending the night, and going for my *first fitting* on Monday. Look for more details on that over at the wedding blog!
